Bertrand Russell Professor Bell has done his work well....Any [one] engaged in learning mathematics will profit by reading him, since he humanizes the subject and helps to a realization of the historical environment. The New York Times Extremely harmonious...a first text in the philosophy of mathematics....Bell's style is very enjoyable.Nature Professor E.T. Bell has written a fascinating book. The amount of biographical details and of mathematics that he has compressed into a volume of 600 pages is extraordinary...he carries the reader along; he whets the appetite.

This is an excellent, comprehensive overview of the work of many of history's greatest minds. Even a well-informed student of this material will find new information and new names. A particularly interesting literary device used throughout is presenting pairs of competing contemporaries vying for a common objective. Even as a fan of this sort of biography, I found much new and insightful in its pages. No single book of which I am aware presents this wide an array of mathematicians. This book is an old work from the 30's and uses a prose style that mercifully has fallen into disuse. The sentences are often LONG and complicated, obscuring already complex explanations. The worst part however, is that "back then" typesetting of mathematics was difficult and expensive. Therefore many presentations which could be clarified with a few lines of symbolic math are instead presented as narrative. I had to read the book with a pad and pencil in hand to write out the results in familiar form.

This book is so so so good. It does an amazing job of providing the history, the personality behind the great minds of Descartes, Pascal, Newton, Leibniz, Euler, Fermat, Gauss, Riemann, Poincare, and many others! 1937 though, so it does not include Andrew Wiles' solution to Fermat's Last Theorem, among modern things. One of the best books out there. I started reading this because it was mentioned in a novel by Ian Stewart. Check him out for fantastic novels concerning mathematics!

When I ordered this book I didn't check on how old it was. - originally published in 1936, it even has an acknowledgement to Edwin Hubble! Still, it is a well-written, interesting read of biographical vignettes of great figures in Mathematics. I was a bit disappointed that it skips from Zeno and othere ancient Greeks straight to Isaac Newton, skipping Cartano and Bombeli, (forgive the spelling, please) who solved the cubic and quartic polynomial equations.

I really liked this book because it fully achieves to take account of the most important mathematicians of all times, although some are left behind because of space constraints, as far as I can realize. My favorite biographical account is that of Euler's, then comes Gauss', Galois', Abel's, Weierstrass and Cantor's. Each and every page of this book can be appreciated by those interested in history of mathematics, specially, I would use it as complementary readings in any course of mathematics since it covers the lives of the men that have developed mathematics from arithmetic to analysis. Please re-read it!

This book Changed my life. First read it age 17. Chapter on Isaac Newton made me major and graduate UCLA with BA in physics. Enabled me to get jobs in Apollo Moon Program and at Korad Lasers, founded by "Maiman, Inventor of the Laser" title of book I wrote as a result, available on Amazon. I founded two laser companies, Florod and Laserod, still in operation, both contributing significantly to the Microelectronics Revolution still in full swing. The chapter in this book on Boole, inventor of Boolean Algebra, helped me with digital circuit design, instrumental in getting us to the Moon in July, 1959 on President Kennedy's goal of the 1960 decade

It is classic. Covers a wide range and was written by a distinguished mathematician. If you just like mathematics it is a must. If you only want to know more about the queen of the sciences don't wait, read this book

Everyone interested in math should read this book sometime. What a tour of great minds. Unfortunate that the book stopped with Cantor. These great mathematicians did not live in a vacuum. They had to deal with the sign of the times, either war or plague or famine or poverty. But in spite of that, they still produced astounding mathematics. This book will broaden your thinking about math and give you much to think about.

I found this book to be a fascinating account of the lives of all the most famous mathematicians. It is written in an older style of language which I found refreshing and occasionally required me to look up a word.
